Each week a lifelong battle awaits 12 little kiwis born with heart defects

Ishaan 7 years old Loves: Music

Ishaan was born with Atrial Septal Defect (a hole in his heart) and a cleft in one of his mitral valve. However, Ishaan’s heart defects weren’t diagnosed until he was three years old as he hadn’t shown any symptoms or signs of a problem.

It was only when Ishaan’s parents took him to their GP as he had a cold that the GP picked up a heart murmur. Further tests then diagnosed the heart defects and at 4 years old Ishaan had his open-heart surgery to repair the hole in his heart and fix the valve.

For Ishaan and his parents this was a terrifying time. The diagnosis was a complete shock to everyone and almost unbelievable. Having to send a terrified four-year-old into surgery was the hardest thing Mala and Michael have had to do. Fortunately Ishaan bounced back after his surgery and was discharged within a week. Ishaan shouldn’t have to have any further surgery but like all children will require ongoing monitoring.

Ishaan is a kind caring boy who loves music and swimming. He has become very independent and confident, trying new things especially if it involves being adventurous and having fun.

Through the family’s involvement with Heart Kids Ishaan loves meeting other children with heart defects. He knows there are other kids out there like him, that have been through the same stuff that he’s been through. For Mala and Michael it has been the same. “It’s the people that we’ve met through Heart Kids who are the only ones that truly understand what it’s like. Being able to talk to families that have been through the same thing has been really comforting for us. We felt supported and less alone, less isolated”.
